Need of Social Service in India

Need of Social Service in India

Basic needs of citizens are mainly

Education, Health, Housing, Food, Social Welfare, Social Security, Income Generation

Under privileged get deprive of it due to following main reasons
  • Poor accessibility due to infrastructure
  • Weak management / administration
  • Low service standard
  • Lack of Professionalism
  • Low moral
  • Lack of focus on issues
  • Non Utilisation of benefits by beneficiaries due to low awareness
  • Others

Even the Report Submitted to World Bank in 1990 says so. Pl find the abstract as below

Abstract from a report submitted to World Bank “How well do India's social service programs serve the poor?”

: “Reaching India's poor calls for greatly improved social service delivery systems, better targeting of the poor, more coordination between agencies, policies aimed at income generation, and more involvement of the poor and of nongovernmental organizations. The authors of this paper found that India's social services were used relatively little by the poor. The health and education of the poor has improved but not as much for the population as a whole. The reasons that all social service programs did so little to alleviate poverty are similar. Physical access to education and health services has improved but inequalities exist because of biases in locating facilities. The access of the poor to housing, social security, and social welfare services has been limited because these services were inadequate relative to needs and because services leak to the non-poor. Social service policies are not comprehensive enough and the quality of services is low. Issues common to the social sector delivery systems are weak management, ineffective targeting, and inflexible service delivery systems that result in a mismatch between perceived needs and services delivered. The bureaucracy is inadequate to reach the poor. Existing capacity and resources are inadequate, particularly for education and health.”

The above report still stands in today’s time as very little changes has been noted. Some of the corrective measures taken by Government in recent time, on war foot basis are expected to deliver better results. Active NGOs & Social Service groups supporting the government move, brings in drastic changes with their active contribution to the efforts. More focus is put in Transparency, Delegating Responsibility with Power and accountability by Government to its officers, these will deliver better result. NGOs & Social Service Groups takes responsibility in reaching to the beneficiaries and creating awareness for better utilization of resources.

Government and Non Government Organisation (NGO) and Social Service Groups should indentify the pitfall within their organization and take the drive in more organized manner. From our past experience it has been learned that providing FREE has not helped, instead rising the income level can be more effective. The effort put in toward income generation and more on sustainability and regular income can bring in more responsible citizens who would value the services & benefits provided. The call for today for the need of social service in India is to bring out Responsible Citizen at all level

Responsibility comes when we value the privileged offered to us, which has a cost factor attached to it. Whether the cost is beared by the beneficiary or other Tax Paying Citizens. India’s 40% population are under privileged, if these huge group joins the income generation force, then it will not only develop them individually but will also add to the growth of economy.

We tried to keep this discussion short...what do you say pl respond or leave your views
